11 Arrested in Statue of Liberty Flag Unfurling


NEW YORK (Reuters) - Eleven people were arrested at the Statue of Liberty
on Sunday after a man climbed through a window in the crown and unfurled a
Puerto Rican flag and a banner, holding police at bay for two hours before
surrendering.

U.S. Park Police said that a group of six people who ascended the statue
to the observation area in the world famous landmark's crown broke out a
window, which one man climbed through before unfurling a Puerto Rican flag
and a banner.

Local media reports said the group was protesting the presence of the U.S.
military on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques.

Police, who arrested the other five, cleared the popular tourist
attraction in New York Harbor of tourists and tried to talk the man into
coming in from the exterior deck. The man, who was not identified,
surrendered after more than two hours, said Sgt. Sal Norman of the U.S.
Parks Police.

Five other people in the group were also arrested, including three who
videotaped the incident, Norman said. Charges from the U.S. Attorney's
office were pending, he said, adding that the man who went onto the
outside deck would likely face additional charges.

The statue, a gift from France to the United States and symbol of the
nation's being a destination for immigrants, is located on Liberty Island
off the southern tip of Manhattan. It is among the city's top tourist
attractions.

desde la corona de la Estatua de la Libertad una bandera pidiendo el fin
de las pr·cticas militares estadounidenses en la isla puertorriqueÒa de
Vieques.

El incidente ocurriÛ a eso de las 10:20 de la maÒana, cuando unas seis
personas ganaron acceso a un ·rea en la corona de la estatua, dijo el
sargento Sal Norman, portavoz de la PolicÌa de Parques de Estados Unidos.

Una persona se ubicÛ del lado de afuera de una ventana en la corona,
sujetando una bandera o pancarta, dijo Norman. IndicÛ que el incidente
durÛ unas dos horas, y algunas personas fueron arrestadas fuera del
monumento.

Los investigadores determinan a$FAn los cargos que radicar·n a los
manifestantes, dijo.
