Background information about Chiapas, Mexico
Injustice has a long history in Chiapas, the southern most  state in Mexico.
However on  January 1,   1994 the Maya people of Chiapas finally said, “!YA BASTA! - Enough is enough!”    Calling themselves the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) these masked rebels demanded education, work, housing, land and health care.

Combat lasted only until Jan. 12, 1994 when a complicated negotiation began resulting in the signing of the San Andrés Peace Accords of February 1996.  To date President Zedillo has refused to implement the peace accords opting for low intensity warfare, including the horrific massacre at Acteal in December 1997. Nevertheless the Zapatista communities are peacefully implementing a profound program of social change. In 1997 the indigenous communities of the highlands began construction of their first autonomous, secondary school.

In March 1999 millions of Mexicans voted support for the EZLN’s demands in  a grassroots’ plebiscite promoted by 2500 Maya women and 2500 Maya men who left Chiapas and traveled throughout Mexico.   This year the ruling party was voted out of office at the state and national levels.  Today students are attending schools administered by Zapatista authorities in the mountains and jungles of Chiapas.

What does Schools for Chiapas Do?
Schools for Chiapas promotes social, political, and educational empowerment for all peoples, especially indigenous and youth.  Our primary program supports the construction and operation of  a model, experimental school system for and by the indigenous, autonomous Maya communities of Chiapas, Mexico.  The Zapatistas hope these schools will serve as a model of just education to guide public schools for children and youth everywhere in the world.  Support for this practical program is developed by a grass roots effort of direct citizen to citizen exchange and education. Related programs include:

· U.S. citizen education, including media and congressional briefings, an internet magazine, classroom curriculum materials, a speakers’ bureau, traveling cultural presentations, and student-to-student exchanges;
· Fundraising to support the construction and operation of a model, experimental schools system of the Zapatista movement..
· School construction teams of Mexicans and internationalists who live and learn in an cultural and education exchange with autonomous Zapatista communities;
· Youth leadership training in the U.S., giving youth the opportunity to lead and participate meaningfully in this and other social movements;
· Advocacy supporting human rights, social justice, and the peaceful resolution of the war against the Mayan people of Chiapas.
