FAIR TRADE ACTION ALERT, COME TO CINCINNATI NOVEMER
16TH!

RE: The WTO's Corporate Sponsors in Cincinnati, Nov.
16
We often worry about how corporations are trying to
rule the world; well, the "TABD" is about as close as
it comes to corporate rule and it's coming to your
neighborhood in November! The Transatlantic Business
Dialogue (TABD) is a coalition of U.S. and European
CEOs that has been key in pushing World Trade
Organization (WTO) expansion. TABD provides an
official path for corporations to make countless
policy demands of the U.S. and European governments
about removing "barriers to trade."
Except what TABD corporations think of as "barriers"
are what we cherish as our key worker protection,
consumer safety, and environmental laws guarding the
public health, protecting us from unsafe products, and
keeping our air and water clean. The TABD will meet
behind closed doors as usual, but this time in the
U.S., in Cincinnati, on November 16-18, 2000. In Ohio,
TABD plans to dodge the democratic process and declare
its latest demands to the flotilla of U.S. and
European government reps attending the session.
Of course, citizens were not invited to their party --
and of course, we're coming anyway. Join the "Seattle
coalition" in downtown Cincinnati on Thursday,
November 16 to protest corporate globalization's
cancer on our democracy and to learn more about TABD's
role in corporate control of global decision-making!
We'll kick off three days of civil society events and
actions with a press conference and rally at Fountain
Square Plaza at noon on Nov. 16, and head to the
Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains at 7:00 p.m. for a
globalization teach-in. Speakers will include Ron
Blackwell of the AFL-CIO, Baldemar Velasquez of Farm
Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), Atherton Martin, a
banana farmer from the Island of Dominica, Dan
Seligman of the Sierra Club, and Public Citizen's own
Lori Wallach.
Here's how you can get involved:
Come to Cincinnati on Nov. 16! We want to see you
there, so make travel plans soon if you live outside
the metro area. The Cincinnati-based Coalition for a
Humane Economy (CHE) is helping to match
out-of-towners with local hosts if you need low-cost
housing. Call them at 513-588-8883, or email
housing@che-2000.org.
Volunteer! Rachael Belz at Ohio Citizen Action needs
help with local outreach and publicity for these
events, and of course we'll need assistance on the
ground that day.
Tell your friends, family and activist allies! Post
and distribute the Flyer (go to our website at
www.tradewatch.org for E-Z downloading) in your
hometown or Cincinnati neighborhood. If you want to
learn more about the TABD, check out the Fact Sheet
(same address or "URL").
In addition here are some of the best resources
online:
www.tabd.com
The official TABD website includes a list of involved
corporations, their Cincinnati agenda, and lists of
key U.S. public interest policies they're planning to
strike down next.

Our website contains fact sheets, flyers, links and
more.

Our friends and colleagues at Corporate Europe
Observatory also have two papers published on their
website: "TABD: Putting the Business Cart Before the
Government Horse" and "Doing Business in Berlin:
Transatlantic Business Dialogue Annual Conference
1999."
