[Announce-DAN] International Day of Silence for Iraqi Children

Colorado Campaign for Middle East Peace

International Day of Silence for Iraqi Children

From Los Angeles to New York, Canada, England and Ireland (at least 23
cities worldwide).

On Saturday, Nov. 11th, from 1-2pm, Mountain-Standard-Time, please
participate in this hour of silence to remember all Iraqi children who have
been killed by the U.S. led-sanctions (see below).

At 1pm in downtown Denver we will have a vigil at 16th & Glenarm Street. We
will have banners and a flyer asking mall shoppers to observe the hour of
silence.

If you can't make it to the vigil, please participate by remaining silent
for this hour. Keep the Iraqi children in your thoughts in prayers.

*****

As 10 years come to a close since the implementation of the United Nations
economic sanctions against Iraq, over 1,000,000 civilians (over 500,000 of
them children) have been killed. These economic sanctions not only prevent
the Iraqi people from receiving proper nourishment and medical treatment,
but they prevent the growth of an infrastructure that can be utilized by the
civilians to pull themselves out of their current state.

The United States has played the lead role in maintaining the economic
sanctions, despite protests from many Americans, human rights activists, and
nations across the globe. The rationale behind this continued policy is to
keep a check on the Iraqi government’s insistence on developing nuclear
weaponry. Whatever the justification for the economic sanctions, it must be
noted that the ten year-long economic starvation of a people has not
achieved any of the stated ends.

Misrepresentation of these facts has led many
elected officials to feel pressured to support economic sanctions, despite
the devastatingly inhumane effects they have on an entire nation.

The National Day of Silence for the Children of Iraq serves as a vehicle to
bring the plight of the Iraqi people to the forefront of the American
conscience. One designated hour of the Day of Silence, 12-1 p.m. (Pacific
Standard Time) will be held as a nationally recognized period of silence and
prayer in memory of all those who have died and those who continue to suffer
under the sanctions.
