- Subject: [Announce-DAN] SOA Protest Send-Off
Hola Todo:
As you are aware, this weekend thousands of protesters will gather at the
gates of US Army's School of Americas (SOA) in Ft. Benning, GA. Many will
"cross the line" in a non-violent civil disobedience to demand that the US
Congress close the SOA.
To support those that are going to the protest, please come to a "Mass for
the Martyrs in El Savdador" at 5:15pm Thursday Nov. 16th at the Regis Chapel
at Regis University (53rd and Lowell). At 6pm, there will be a commissioning
of those going to the protest as our representatives.
On Sunday, Nov. 19th, there will be a 12:30 mass in solidarity with those
crossing the line in Ft. Benning at the time in the Regis University Chapel.
This year the US Congress "closed" the school and reopened it under a new
name, the Defense Institute for Hemispheric Security Cooperation (DIFSHC).
The mission and the training are the same. The mission is to provide the
Pentagon with "access" to Latin American military officers, that is, create
a cadre of "professional killers" in the service of US corporate interests
in the region.
SOA graduates have been responsible for most of the major human rights
violations in Latin America since its founding: from the assassination of
Archbishop Romero in El Salvador in 1980 to the assassination of Bishop
Gerardi in Guatemala in 1998 from the massacre at El Mozote in El Salvador
in 1981 to the massacre in Mapiripan in Colombia in 1997. Colombia has the
largest number of graduates from the SOA since its founding. Not
coincidentally, the Colombian military has the worst human rights record in
the region. Currently, an average of 1 massacre (3 or more civilians killed
at one time) occurs every day in Colombia, while 1.8 million people are
internally displaced the largest refugee crisis outside of Afghanistan. We
must stop US support political repression in Latin America. Shutdown the SOA
by any name.
Please support the SOA protest this year. Write a letter to the editor and
to your legislators.
