[Announce-DAN] Film tonight -Slight correction

Hi,

The film is tonight (Tuesday) --the earlier press release was wrong.

Carolyn

While trapped like a rat in another mind numbing traffic jam on 36 or I-25 and coating your lungs with God knows what thatís spewing out of the countless tailpipes surrounding you, have you ever pondered just how we got into this mess and why we cannot seem to find a way out of our dependence on the automobile?
On Tuesday, November 21st at 7 pm, in the main auditorium of the Boulder Public library, Films for Change will present a free showing of Taken For A Ride, a fascinating documentary which describes how it all started and what pressures continue to impede progress on this critical issue.
Taken for a Ride reveals the outrageous and little known story of an auto and oil industry campaign, led by General Motors, Standard Oil, and Firestone Tires to structure the U.S. transportation system around the automobile and the internal combustion engine. Part of this campaign included buying up and dismantling streetcar lines and selling diesel buses to cities to replace them. Creating the highway lobby, these companies then pushed through Congress funding for a vast network of urban freeways that fueled uncontrolled suburban development, increased our auto dependence to what it is today, and basically set back any hopes of real public transportation in our country by a century.
With investigative journalism, vintage archival footage and candid interviews, Taken for a Ride presents a revealing history of our cities in the 20th century that also provokes thought on the societal effects of misdirected corporate power, and the social and environmental implications of a manipulated transportation policy.
The documentary will be followed by a moderated discussion of local and national transportation issues. Please attend.
