"My people at that very moment were at a crossroads in our history. Every one 
of us was needed for the confrontation at hand. Even as I sat manacled for 
five months in a Milwaukee jail on those phony charges, the lid blew off on 
the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The occupation and siege at 
Wounded Knee had begun on February 27, 1973. I wish I could have been there.

Before the jail bars shut with finality behind me, I jumped pretrial 
bail--which a few friends had surprisingly managed to get for me in late 
April--and shortly thereafter I slipped out of town, later becoming a hunted 
fugitive when I missed my pretrial hearing. I felt no more guilty running 
from my oppressors than a Jew in Nazi Germany would have felt guilty running 
from the Gestapo. Like them, I was being targeted for being who I was. Not 
until 1978, after I had already been convicted and imprisoned on that other 
set of false charges stemming from the 1975 firefight at Oglala, would I 
stand trial on those original phony attempted murder charges in Milwaukee. I 
was found not guilty. Government misconduct had been so overt and clumsy in 
that case that the jury acquitted."
