[Announce-DAN] Events, Send an email , make a call

Hi,

The Boulder County Commissioners finally set a public hearing on banning GMOs on County Open Space, BUT they set it for 2 p.m. on January 23. We think the daytime hour won't work for many people and will make it difficult for many people to attend. What do you think? Please send the commissioners an email or make a call if you think an evening would serve the community and yourself better. Their emails are: Ron Stewart rksco@co.boulder.co.us Jana Mendez jlmco@co.boulder.co.us
Paul Danish pauldanish@aol.com

Also please call the White House 1-202-456-1111 and ask Clinton for a clemency for Leonard Peltier. Clinton recently indicated he will make a decision on this before he leaves office. Make a call every day!

Here's some upcoming events for the next week or so. Also note the announcement at the end about the globalization conference in Boulder March 8-9.

Wednesday, December 6th at 7 pm in the main auditorium of the Boulder Public Library, Films for Change will present a free showing of AFFLUENZA- an entertaining and groundbreaking film that takes a look at one of the greatest social maladies of our time: overconsumption and materialism. Hosted by National Public Radio's Scott Simon, the film explores both the comical and sobering aspects of our consumerism and its enormous impact on families, communities and the environment.

With the help of historians and archival film, AFFLUENZA reveals the forces that have dramatically transformed us from a nation that prizes thriftiness-with strong beliefs in "plain living and high thinking"-into the ultimate consumer society.

The presentation will be followed by a moderated discussion led by Angela Owens, owner of Boulder by Design and Kayann Short, CU instructor and activist who has co-ordinated activities related to the International Buy Nothing Day. For more information please call 303-417-0236.

Come 3Rally to Reclaim Our Holiday Season from Mass Consumerism2 on Sunday, December 10th at noon, at 6th and Main in Longmont. Americans produce five million extra tons of garbage from Thanksgiving to New Years Day, while the media exhorts us to honor our loved ones by giving them 3stuff,2 much of which was produced in sweatshops with little regard for people or the environment. Let1s acknowledge the new millennium with new ideas about how to celebrate this season of thanks and giving. Come meet like-minded people, and bring your ideas for a more simple, authentic, earth-friendly holiday!

Zapatistas, Elections, NAFTA and Paramilitaries: What is going on in Mexico?

Celebrate the 52nd Anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights with:

Federico Anaya, Mexican indigenous rights activist and human rights lawyer. Federico is one of the founding members of the Fray Bartolome de las Casas Human Rights Center in Chiapas, Mexico. He currently works out of Mexico City.

Melissa Riestra, is an organizer for the Mexico Solidarity Network. She has lived in Chiapas for two years. In 1998, she was project coordinator for Appropriate Technology Exchange building gravity powered water systems in communities in Chiapas. Since 1999 she has been working with the Coordinadora de Contacto Regional De los Altos, a grassroots community organization that does educational forums with civil society in Chiapas.

There has been a lot said of Mexico' recent elections and the fact that, for the first time in 71 years, the offices of the President of Mexico and the Governor of Chiapas were lost by the PRI and won by opposition candidates. Not much has been said about the human rights violations, the corruption and the continuing war against indigenous peoples in Mexico.

Does the election of two men resolve the problems of Mexico? What do the recent events in Mexico mean and what will the future bring for Mexicans and for the relationship of the United States and Mexico?

The mainstream media will not address these issues. Please come and take advantage of this opportunity to listen to Federico Anaya and Melissa Riestra discuss these important issues.

Sponsored by the Chiapas Coalition of Denver/Boulder. For more information call (303) 871-9464 or (303) 623-1463.

Federico Anaya (above) will also speak in Boulder at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 11 at 7 p.m.at Chemistry 142, CU Campus, Boulder.

On the 11th, people who have traveled to Chiapas from Colorado will give a slide show and have Mexican food at 5:30 p.m. at Hellems 241, CU Campus Boulder. ___________________________________________________________________________________
PUT This on your 2001 calendar! Local groups that want to endorse this conference should call Carolyn or Betty at 303-444-6981.
Globalization Conference: March 8-11, Boulder The Vision: On November 30, 1999, thousands of people joined together in the streets of Seattle to protest the undemocratic and destructive practices of the World Trade Organization. The Seattle protests demonstrated the ability of regular, everyday people to stem the relentless march of corporate globalization. The victory has fueled the mobilization of concerned citizens across the country against profit-driven globalization. Again in Washington D.C., the IMF/World Bank protests exhibited the power of the emerging national and international movement to prioritize human rights, workers rights, and the environment over the blind quest for profits.

On March 8th, the people will come together again. This time the epicenter will be Boulder, Colorado. From March 8-11, the citizens of Boulder will host a conference to build and strengthen the movement to establish environmental and social justice as the first priority of international institutions like the IMF, World Bank, WTO, and transnational corporations. If these institutions cannot serve the people, we must chart and pursue a new course for the future. How can we make the voice of the people the voice of "globalization"?

Here are the goals as they were last visited and consensed to:

1) The conference will bring together the different communities of action working against corporate globalization, including the environmental community, labor, and human/indigenous rights organizations.

2) The conference will bring in organizers working internationally (i.e the Zapatistas, Oogoni of Nigeria, U'Wa etc.).

3) The conference will provide as many organizing workshops and networking/discussion opportunities as we can possibly provide, in addition to having speakers and panels. Dialogue will be prioritized.

4) Outreach for the conference will focus on youth based organizations. The conference will help build the youth movement in the context of globalization. In order to promote an intergenerational connection, select organizations closely tied to youth based groups will also be focused on.
