(first, please call the White House 1-202-456-1111 and ask Clinton for a
clemency for Leonard Peltier. Clinton recently indicated he will make a
decision on this before he leaves office. Make a call every day!)
Hola Compaņeros:
This weekend we will support a Holiday Season of Conscience by pressuring
Kohl's clothing store to respect labor rights in Nicaragua.
We will also celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human
Rights by learning about the human rights organizing in Mexico from
Frederico Anaya, a Mexican human rights lawyer with 10 years of experience
in Chiapas.

3. Write Kohl's, please cut and paste the following letter and mail it to:
Larry Montgomery, CEO, Kohl's Department Stores, Inc., N56 W17000 Ridgewood
Dr., Menomonee Falls, WI 53051.
Dear Mr. Montgomery:
I am concerned that the Kohl's company has refused to accept its moral
responsibility to correct serious sweatshop abuses at the Chentex factory
producing for it in Nicaragua. Further, I am outraged that Chentex
management has pulled out of negotiations with the union that represents the
factory's workers. They have said that they refuse to rehire any of the
wrongfully fired union leaders.
Don't cut and run! That will hurt your corporate image even more than your
present failure to accept responsibility for the manner in which your
products are made. There are indications that Kohl's has begun to reduce its
production at the Chentex factory to avoid having to deal with unions. Your
actions will influence my holiday purchasing decisions and those of my
family and friends. Your company has leverage. Use it so that the Chentex
factory will:
Rehire all the fired union members. Drop criminal charges against union
organizers. Recognize and bargain with the unions.
Sincerely,
(for a printable version of the letter go to:

4. Write President Fox of Mexico
Dear President Fox:
I am writing to out of concern about human rights serious human rights
violations in Chiapas and express my support for a peaceful resolution to
the conflict there.
I would like to congratulate Vicente Fox on his inauguration as President of
Mexico. But I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage the new
President to fulfill his campaign promises to introduce to the Mexican
Congress the COCOPA proposal for implementing the San Andres Accords and to
renew peace talks with the EZLN. I hope that he will make the effort
necessary to ensure approval of the implementing legislation that is
consistent with both the letter and the spirit of the San Andres Accords.
In view of the massive presence of the Mexican Army in Chiapas, I urge
President Fox to order an immediate withdrawal of a significant number of
military camps from Chiapas. This would serve as a confidence building
measure that would improve the conditions for renewed peace talks with the
EZLN.
In addition, I also encourage the new President to dismantle/disarm
paramilitary groups in Chiapas and prosecute those responsible for human
rights violations. I hope that the new President will provide for a safe
return of those displaced by war to their places of origin. To guarantee
these changes, I expect that President Fox will eliminate restrictions on
presence of international human rights observers.
In conclusion, I have high hopes that the President Fox will fulfill his
promises opportunity to create the conditions for a peaceful resolution of
the conflict in Chiapas and respect the human rights of the indigenous
peoples in Chiapas. For this, I will be watching closely.
Sincerely,
In Solidarity,
David Martin
