[Announce-DAN] Beat The Heat Guidelines from CopWatch

Beat The Heat Guidelines
1.	When stopped by the police, keep your hands in view and don't make sudden
moves. (Police are scared. They have reason to be scared. Think about how
they're feeling and avoid pushing their buttons.)
2.	Cops are allowed to lie about being a cop; narcs are allowed to do drugs.
3.	When detained or arrested, don't talk to store security and don't talk to
cops. Just give your name and address, say you're not going to answer any
other questions, and ask for a lawyer.
4.	Store security is not required to read you your rights. Anything you say
to them will be used against you in court. Cops only have to read you your
rights if both (a) you're under arrest and (b) they want to ask questions.
If the cops arrest you and don't ask you questions, but you go ahead and
start talking to them, your statements will be used against you in court.
(Sometimes you can talk your way out of trouble, but much less often than
people think. Crying is sometimes helpful; talking is nearly always
harmful.)
5.	Even if you say, "I want to remain silent," but later you start talking
to the police, the cops can question you. If you realize you blew it, you
can still get your right to silence back again by just saying so. As soon as
you remember, you can say, "I changed my mind. I want to remain silent now.
I'm not going to say anything else without a lawyer."
6.	If cops come to the door with an arrest warrant, step outside and lock
the door. Cops can search any room you go into. If they do have an arrest
warrant, hiding in your house isn't likely to help, so you might as well go,
without letting them into your house.
7.	If cops come and say they have a search warrant, take it and read it to
make sure it's really a warrant. Look to see that it's signed and dated. See
if it has your correct address and a recent date. If the cops haven't got a
good warrant, tell them to go get another. (The cops may threaten to tear
the house apart if you make them go get another warrant, but they'll
probably do that anyway, even if you let them in right away.)
8.	If your parent is telling you to make statements to the police without
your lawyer there, don't give in. Be respectful but firm. Don't let your
parents talk you into giving up your rights.
9.	Watch out for the Good-Cop/Bad-Cop routine. Even if the "good cop" is
someone of your same race or gender, don't get fooled. It's easy for cops to
play games with you when you're feeling scared, alone, or ashamed.
10.	If you're arrested with friends, make an agreement that no one will talk
until everyone's been able to communicate and decide what to do. It's easy
to get paranoid when you're alone, away from your buddies.
