version of this announcement won't arrive in time.  See below for details, plan

Justice for Mena
Fire Bini Campaign

This campaign will give voice to peoples' dissatisfaction with Bini's
reinstatement, continue the media coverage of public reaction, and pressure the
Mayor personally to fire Bini.

First action was on Tuesday, February 6
A group of eight representing the Justice For Mena Committee, Denver CopWatch,
End the Politic$ of Cruelty, The Mayor's Latino Advisory Council, and concerned
Denver residents met with Mayor Webb to express our dissatisfaction with the
new Zavaras/Whitman regime since it is continuing the policies of the past -
covering for cop misconduct, planning promotions for bad cops, and re-instating
Joe Bini
- a cop who has repeatedly used no-knock raids to intimidate people who he
determines are uncooperative.

The Mayor said that recent settlements that have cost the City of Denver a
million plus were not due to police misconduct, but were due to poor
representation from
their legal defense and that getting a new law firm was going to solve the
problem.

He also said that he was working on reform with Whitman and Zavaras, but it was
a secret plan that involved hiring police consultants from around the country.
He was
adamant that community involvement in these reforms was unnecessary.

We feel that letting cops police themselves is a huge problem.  It leads to
cover ups, an aura of impunity around police actions, and the empowering of
rogue cops to
commit crimes with complete impunity.

If there was genuine, independent investigation of police activity, high
ranking Denver cops would lose their jobs and some would go to jail.  They need
the insider control
that Webb, the PSRC, and internal affairs provide.

Joe Bini knowingly lied on the warrant that lead to Ismael Mena's death.  The
plea bargain agreement was a sweetheart deal by Jeffco prosecutors, who
collaborated to hide the serious problems the Mena case revealed about the
Denver Police Department.

Leafleting and sign waving at major intersections. Inform and mobilize the
People of Denver to these grave human rights violation.
