[discuss-dan] Legislative Contact Information & current issues of interest

To get e-mail, phone numbers, and what our legislators are doing to us or for us go to this website:

Of current interest (the energy problem and EXCEL's high prices), is the need for connecting the Public Utilities Commissions performance to the fair pricing of energy cost to consumers.  See HB01-1030, PUC Salaries, it sets their pay at $87,000 annually, by House Rep Young, and House Rep Reeves.  This observer thinks it should not be automatic, and that a report card system should be set up where they get a base pay of say $50,000 and then based on their performance, incentives of say $10,000 increments if they keep energy prices within inflation rates.  Another $10,000 if prices don't grow more than $10% of last years.  And with the development of a system of not just spot purchases of energy needs, but also development of a portfolio of both spot and bulk purchases of energy needs.  An incentive for portfolio performance of another $10,000 if it is deemed as a good performing portfolio.

In this age of pay for performance, this observers believes that not only teachers but legislators, commissioners, and state officers should get paid for their performance.  And at the PUC should be the first test.  We are the customers and they both (EXCEL and the PUC) work for us...not us working for them.

Don't allow a rubber stamp of salary for the PUC, make them earn it...they haven't yet...in this observers views.  Protest this by emailing R-Rep. Brad Young at byoung@sni.net or phone 3030-866-2940, and phone Dem. Sen. Peggy Reeves at 303-866-484

Also, HB01-1035, that does not allow workstudy students, (or even Student Government Assembly paid student elected representatives) to be members of the Board of Trustees....think about it...we are being shut out for working for a living...from being on the state BOT.  This one is by Rep Larson, Rep Spence, and Rep Tupa.

And also, SB 01-146, the Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Act of 2001...by Sen. Ron Tupa, and Joan Fitzgerald...I haven't read it...or seen a copy of it...but it is of great interest to this observer.
