Dear friends,
*********************************
1) Urgent Help Needed for Burma freedom in U.S. Congress!
2) Sample Script of What to Say to Your Congressperson
3) List of Phone Numbers for Foreign Relations Committee
**************************************
We have a sizeable crisis on our hands and need your phone calls
immediately, please. Last May, a concurrent resolution on Burma was
introduced in the House and Senate. It is a bipartisan effort to express
the sense of the Congress in recognition of the 1990 elections and the
urgent need to improve the democratic and human rights of the people of Burma.
The House still needs to pass the resolution. The alarming situation is
Subcommittee Chairman Doug Bereuter brought in an amendment to delete the
endorsement of U.S. sanctions against the military junta by saying the
sanctions have been totally ineffective. It is really a dangerous trend
trying to take off amidst the mounting brutal crack down of the military
regime on Aung San Suu Kyi and Burmese democratic movement. We are gravely
concerned of this situation. We feel that corporate lobbying in favor of
constructive engagement is going too far.
***************************************
2) We definitely need to reinstate the sanctions language at the mark up of
the House International Relations Committee that will be held in a week.
Please call your Congressperson or ANY Congressperson on the committee to
let them know that we support a continued strong policy toward Burma and
that we should NOT delete the language on sanctions.
1) Ask to speak with the Congressperson or their foreign affairs staff.
2) Inform them that you are a constituent.
3) Tell Them What Resolution You Are Talking About: House Concurrent
Resolution #328
4) Tell Them That You Support the Use of Sanctions Against Burma
5) Tell Them that You Want the Resolution to include the original language,
which included languate on sanctions.
6) Say that You Support Aung San Suu Kyi and you hope they do too. She is
the one who requested the sanctions in the first place.
7) Anything else you want.
8) If they do not answer, leave a message with your phone number and ask
them to return your phone call
Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions or concerns, I'm
at 202-387-8030. Also, please do drop me a note after you have called so we
can get on idea of if the pressure is working or not.
