2/11 Action Alert!!! SB 177-Call Sen. Gordon

ACTION ALERT!  SB 177-Call Senator Gordon asap

Sen. Gordon is the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a former
Public Defender.  He told me on Friday (2/9) that he is not planning on
supporting any of Senator Tate's bill (SB 177)  which means it will die in
committee on Wednesday, Feb. 14th unless we can get him to change his mind. 
  In brief, Sen. Gordon is making his decision not to support SB 177 over
politics--not philosophy.  Senator Gordon  wants to put together his own
"joint" house/senate committee with others from the District Attorney's
Counsel, Governor's Office and the Department of Corrections to do an
"overhaul" of all criminal sentencing later this year.  Sen. Gordon told me
that both the Gov's office and the DOC told him that  they won't work with
him on his "overhaul" if he supports ANY part of SB 177.  So, in talking
with him on Friday--he doesn't want to lose the Gov & DOC on his agenda so
he's killing ours.  Please call him (even if you're already called him) and
urge him to consider SB 177 on its merits-not on politics.  That would be

light of this, it is also important to pack the Senate Judiciary Committee
Hearing on Wednesday the 14th.  The hearing on SB 177 should begin around
2:30 in either Senate Hearing Room 353 or 356.  Sen. Tate told me we will
