Re: virus recommendations
evan is right.
microsoft outlook is the mail program that would have been infected
by the <WScript.KakWorm.dr> virus that i received last night from
someone in telluride. and the same with the WScript virus that
nancy inadvertantly sent to me.
i use pegasus, a freeware mail program recommended by my
computer wizard. because of that, the WScript virus didn't affect
me. nor the Anna virus, which is a purported picture of the Russian
(?) ice skater Anna K-----------. it has a virus that broke the record
for going around the world in a couple of hours (last night or the
night before).
what my computer wizard suggests (he doesn't use a virus
program, as viruses develop faster than anti-virus programs can
protect against them) is:
1) don't use Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express as
your mail program. find a different program. most viruses are
targeted for this Gates product, due to its widespread use (why
make a virus for a handful of users when you can infect millions
with the Micrsoft product?). also, viruses have been designed to
work by only opening a message in Microsoft Outlook mail
programs. you don't have to open an attachment, which is how
most viruses work.
2) never open an attachment with the extension <----.exe> which
stands for "execute". that means it is a program that will run
something, probably a virus. merely delete it.
3) if you get email with generic subject names like I Love You or
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves or from users you have no
idea of who they are, it's best to delete them.
4) it wouldn't hurt to have an anti-virus program and update it
regularly. i run mine every night when i'm not using my computer,
and by updating it every time before you get mail off your server,
you're better protected.
