- Subject: SB 177 UPDATE & MEETING REMINDER
SB 177 UPDATE: SB 177 was heard before the Senate Judiciary Committee on
Wednesday, February 14th. Despite excellent and compelling testimony, SB
177 was killed on a 3-4 vote. There were no amendments and the bill was
voted on in its entirety. Voting FOR were Senators Hernandez
(303.866,4875), Windels (303.866.4840) and Linkhart (303.866.4861). Please
feel free to call them and thank them for their support.
Voting AGAINST were Senators Arnold (R), Dyer (R), Hillman (R), and Gordon
(D). Sen Gordon said that he would not support the bill because the
district attorney's council, the governor's office, and the department of
corrections all testified in opposition. Sen Gordon wants to put together a
bi-partisan "interim committee" of legislators and representatives from the
Governor's office, the DAs council, and the Dept. of Corrections to develop
sentencing reform legislation for the 2002 session. Sen. Gordon has
indicated that members of the Prison Moratorium Coalition can also
participate. This committee should start to meet soon-so I'll keep you
posted on when the meetings are scheduled. I'll also find out more from
Sen. Gordon how we can "participate". I assume that we will be able to
attend the meetings and provide testimony-but we won't be sitting at the
table-if you know what I mean.
PLEASE DON'T BE TOO DISHEARTENED. THERE IS GREATER DEBATE THAN EVER OVER
NEEDING TO DO SOMETHING BESIDES BUILDING MORE PRISONS AND THAT'S BECAUSE OF
US. WE JUST HAVE TO KEEP UP THE PRESSURE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF
YOUR SUPPORT OF SB 177. IT'S NOT OVER…..
NEXT COALITION MEETING: Sunday, February 25th from 1-3:00 p.m. at the
Colorado Progressive Coalition's office, 1420 Ogden St., Denver
