PROPOSAL NUMBER: 001-08
1. Date proposed January 31st, 2008.
Sponsors: Dave Chandler of the Adams/Jeffco Greens and Co-chair of the Green Party of Colorado, Tom Kelly of the Arapahoe Greens and Co-Chair of the Green Party of Colorado, Scott Zulauf and Kevin Alumbaugh of the Adams/Jeffco Greens.
2. TITLE:
Select the date of Saturday, May 3rd, as the date of the Green Party of Colorado state convention. Location to be in the Denver metro area.
3. FULL PROPOSAL:
Denver, Arapahoe and Adams/Jeffco Greens are volunteering to host the 2008 state convention of the Green Party of Colorado on Saturday, May 3rd, exact times and location yet-to-be determined.
4. BACKGROUND:
There has been discussion on the list serve of different
dates for the state meeting. On January 25thDave Chandler posted an email
with responses from several Greens. The consensus seemed to be for an early
date in May especially as the deadline for submitting candidates for the
upcoming general election draws near. In the past there has been an effort
to hold the state meeting in districts outside of the Denver metro area to
facilitate attendance by Greens from other areas of the sate. This is why
last year's location in Carbondale was chosen. The Adams/Jeffco Greens
decided by consensus at a recent meeting to volunteer to host the state
meeting. Denver and Arapahoe Greens have also agreed to be hosts. Since
this decision was announced there was positive feedback on the Greens
discussion list and other chapters have not formally proposed an alternative
location.
5. Justification/Goals:
Annual state meeting of the Green Party of Colorado hosted by Arapahoe, Denver, and Adams/Jeffco Greens on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008, to discuss official business of the Party and select candidates for the upcoming general election.
6. Pros:
Holding the state meeting on the first weekend in May will provide
an opportunity to select candidates well before the filing deadline and
determine strategies for activities related to the DNC in August. It has
been suggested that May 10th is Mother's Day weekend and might result in
conflicts. The earlier date would also allow Art Goodtimes to meet his
mid-May deadline for planting 38 varieties of heirloom spuds. Go spuds!
Cons:
A Denver metro area location may present logistical problems for
Greens in out-lying chapters to attend. Hopefully there will be car-pooling
opportunities and volunteers will provide accommodations for Greens
traveling from a distance. The May 3rd date will coincide with Cinco De
Mayo weekend. As long as the location (yet-to-be determined) is not too
close to downtown there shouldn't be parking issues and this date might
possible provide outreach opportunities??
7. Alternatives to the proposal:
Holding the state meeting on a different
date.
