PROPOSAL NUMBER: 010-05

1. Date proposed August 9, 2005. Sponsor: Rick VanWie - Co-Chair, Denver Green Party

2. TITLE:
Colorado Green Party Labor Day Picnic

3. FULL PROPOSAL:
The Green Party of Colorado endorses the resolution passed at the monthly Denver and Jefferson County Green Party monthly meeting for a Labor Day Picnic to be held on Labor Day, September 5, in Denver, Colorado and will reimburse the Denver and Jefferson County Green Parties up to $300.00 in expenses for permits, insurance, food, beverages and related costs.

4. BACKGROUND:
At the yearly meeting of the Green Party of Colorado held July 10, 2005, it was mentioned that the idea had been raised among Denver and Jefferson County Green to have a Labor Day Picnic. This was because the AFL-CIO is not having a Labor Day Parade. Later that month, at the monthly meeting of the Denver and Jefferson County Green Parties, it was decided to go forward with organizing the picnic. Rick VanWie is leading the organizing of the event.

5. Justification/Goals:
=======================
This is the first attempt by the Denver and JeffCo Green Parties to organize a Labor Day event with organized labor, progressive and other organizations. Putting the Green Party of Colorado "stamp" on this event will give the State party exposure. Funding by the State party will allow for renting space at a Denver park, insurance, food and beverage which are necessary for a successful picnic.

6. Pros and Cons:
=================
Pro:
The Green Party of Colorado will be reaching out to organized labor and supporting organizations. If the event is successful, then it is possible that contacts between labor and the Greens can be made. It is also possible that a Labor Day celebration spearheaded by Greens could become a tradition, and possibly even branch out to other cities in Colorado.
Con:
If no one attends, then the money invested by the GPCO will be gone, and no labor contacts will have been made.

7. Alternatives to the proposal:
================================
None. The Denver and JeffCo parties do not have the resources to sponsor the picnic on their own.

8. Supporting statements:
=========================
This proposal was endorsed by the Denver and Jefferson County Green Parties at the July combined monthly meeting.
