Thursday, April 19 End Commercial Logging Presentation

Presentation by Sierra Club members includes the 20 minute video "This Land is Your Land" which documents a century of National Forest Management.  There will be a short meeting following the presentation for volunteer activist attendees interested in the Sierra Club's End Commercial Logging campaign.  The presentation will be at Borders Books & Music, 1149 Lancaster Ave. in Bryn Mawr at 7:30 pm.

Saturday, April 21 Protest to Stop "NAFTA for the Americas"

From April 17-21 trade ministers will be meeting to negotiate the expansion of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to the entire Western hemisphere - a trade agreement called the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).  According to the Pennsylvania Fair Trade Campaign, the FTAA would increase downward pressure on wages, living standards, the environment, public health laws, and public services.  In conjunction with the protests occurring at the FTAA meeting in Quebec City - there will be a demonstration in Philadelphia on the west side of City Hall at 10:00 AM.  Bring your banners, bring your voices, bring your friends.  Contact the Pennsylvania Consumer Action Network (PCAN) for more information, www.pcan.org, email: stopftaa@pcan.org, 610-478-7888.

Earth Day

Earth Day Fair at Bryn Mawr College

Celebrate the Earth and gather on the grass of Merion Green for vegan and vegetarian foods, homemade "greenbooks" and the formal introduction of Bryn Mawr's new pond! Read an account of Bryn Mawr College's transition to organic groundskeeping and their new pond by student Hannah Stutzman - (*here). Pond tours will be conducted throughout the day. Earth Day Benefit Concert at The Point

Maggi, Pierce, and E.J. will perform at the Point in Bryn Mawr.  Opening for them will be Craig Elkins of Huffamoose.  This is a special event sponsored by The Point for Earth Day, from which a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Sierra Club.  Local Sierra Club leaders will be there with environmental information for all who come.  The Point is located  at 880 W. Lancaster Ave. in Bryn Mawr, 610-527-0988. Tuesday, April 24 Protest to stop the SEPTA fare hike!

Sunday, May 6 Public Forum on Genetically Engineered Food

This event features two leading thinkers on the subject of biotechnology, Paul Root Wolpe, on the faculty of the Center of Bioethics of the U. of Pennsylvania, and Brian Tokar, a faculty member at the Institute for Social Ecology and Goddard College in Plainfield, VT.  There will be introductory lectures followed by audience dialogue.  More information can be found in the latest issue of Progressive Health magazine (available free at entrances to area grocery stores), or by calling 610-640-2788.  

  • Admission to the event is $7 in advance, $10 at the door ($5 for CAPHA members).  Advance registration is recommended because seating is limited.  Send registration with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to CAPHA, P.O. Box 775, Paoli, PA 19301.

This begins a weekend of events to draw attention to the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal as well as other issues such as the death penalty, the prison-industrial complex, racial profiling, police brutality, the Phila. Sunday, June 10 National Mobilization to Stop Star Wars and Abolish Nuclear Weapons

Friday, June 29 - Sunday, July 1 Pro-Democracy Convention

The Center for Constitutional Rights and a wide array of organizations are sponsoring a National Pro-Democracy Convention at the Annenberg Center on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.  With the Voter's Bill of Rights as a primary focus, the National Pro-Democracy Convention will be a vehicle to gather up and galvanize the disparate and disaffected constituencies and movements outraged by the flawed presidential election to build a permanent  force for real democracy.  

The Convention will include a range of important activities:

  • Preceding the convention, there will be a Training Institute for anyone interested in intensive work towards election reform.

  • The kick- off event for the Convention will be a National Town Hall Meeting, where national leaders will speak out about Election 2000 and offer recommendations for democratic reforms.

  • Throughout the convention, there will be continuous information and discussion around the principles outlined in the Voters' Bill of Rights and strategies for strengthening the pro-democracy movement.

Saturday, September 29 - Sunday, September 30 World Bank and IMF Protests in Washington, DC

On Saturday, while protests are aimed at the World Bank and IMF, also protest the Bush administration's policies that exacerbate problems caused by these organizations.  The IAC's "Beat Back the Bush Attack" protest is scheduled for 10 AM in Lafayette Park and around the White House.

 

Another major action on Saturday has been organized by the LASC (a coalition of over 40 Latin American solidarity organizations in the U.S.).  The LASC will conduct a protest march against U.S. military andeconomic intervention in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in Colombia. The march is expected to start at 10:30 a.m. from Upper Senate Park near Union Station and make its way to the White House to  join with the IAC protest around 2 p.m.

 

If you are interested in going to Washington, D.C. on the 29 to protest the IMF, bus tickets are available departing from Philadelphia. The cost is $20.00 round trip. They must be paid for in advance. Organizers need to know how many people are going ASAP, contact Elizabeth Fattah ( mead@sas.upenn.edu ) regarding tickets or the IAC (see above).

The IAC has an annual fall flea market in October.  They need used books, records, tapes, CD's, clothing, small furniture, household items, toys - you name it - for this sale that helps keep their office open. Saturday, October 13 International Day of Protest of the Militarization of Space

Join the more than 150 protests to be held internationally - endorsed by groups worldwide, including the Greens/Green Party USA. 10/19/01 Flyer :  "While we have much sympathy for the families and friends of those who died in the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, our grief is not a call for war.  We oppose the current bombing of Afghanistan, and call for its immediate halt. War is simply not the answer.  We repudiate anti-Arab, anti-Muslim and all other forms of racism, especially the racial profiling instigated by police and other government security forces.  People must be allowed to speak their minds. New laws threaten to severely restrict everyone's basic democratic rights.  Funds are needed here at home for jobs, education, healthcare and social security. Our communities should not lose any funding to pay for this war."

At 12PM noon, a rally in Love Plaza 15th & JFK, Philadelphia followed by march to 5th & Market (site of pro-war news media & Liberty Bell).  Initiated by Philadelphia A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism).
