RI GREEN PARTY CANDIDATES 2004
LARRY KERN
Candidate RI State Representative District 37 Westerly, RI

As a Green, I will focus on issues relating to the "four Pillars" of the Green party:

Grassroots Democracy:
- Use Instant Runoff Voting in RI elections to give voters more choice and break the one-party monopoly in our state.
- Support the Separation of Powers ballot issue.
- Oppose efforts to give non-resident property owners voting rights (one person, one vote!)

Ecology:
- Protect & restore the waters of RI - the aquifers we drink from, the rivers, lakes, salt ponds & ocean we swim in & gather food from.
- Plan now, and build soon to prepare for a future with out oil.

Social Justice:
- Single Payer health care
- Affordable Housing

Peace:
- Enact legislation which would prevent the RI National Guard from being deployed outside the USA without a declaration of war by the US Congress

STEPHEN LAMARRE
Green Party Candidate for Mayor of Warwick

I've lived in RI all my life and have been a Warwick resident for 19 years. An illness forced me to leave college at age 23 because I could not afford health care. It is absurd that such a thing happens all the time in our country, the wealthiest in the world. I feel strongly for those who struggle to afford reasonable health care. I will push for Warwick to have more access to Canadian drugs and other affordable health opportunities.
People of all ages need access to education or else they are denied the opportunities they deserve in life. I want non-violent conflict resolution to be taught in Warwick schools, as well as programs that focus on helping at-risk students. I want to provide more in adult education programs. Providing more literacy and GED training will help families live more independently. It will give them more opportunities in employment and further education. And it will strengthen our economy.
Being a Green, and having seen first hand the tragedies that pollution can create, I want to pursue environmental goals for Warwick. The local airport must not be expanded, and should be held responsible for its pollution. I want more air quality testing around the airport. If I am elected, more steps will be taken to reduce chemical and nutrient pollution in Greenwich Bay. I want to make a goal to phase in solar power for new homes and buildings, including public housing, that are built in Warwick. Our dependence on oil is hurting our economy and environment. Phasing in solar power will not only save us money, but also lives. Thank you for your support.

JEFF TOSTE
Candidate RI Senator District 5 Providence, RI

Campaign message:

If you don’t like politics, don’t vote for a politician.

Jeff is a community advocate — NOT a politician.

What is a community advocate?
Someone who fights for the community. Politicians don't act until people speak out; community advocates are the ones speaking out. Jeff Toste speaks out for a community that needs health care for everyone, civic education, and local jobs that pay a living wage.

Who is Jeff Toste?
Jeff is a waiter, an artist, and a longtime resident of District 5. Jeff has actively worked with numerous advocacy groups in Providence for over six years.

Vote for community advocate — NOT a politician.

Jeff Toste is a Green Party Candidate
The Green Party is a grassroots democratic party

Jeff Toste’s community experience: Jeff has worked with and his 2002 Senate campaign was endorsed by the RI Sierra Club; RI Latino Political Action Committee; the Million Mom March and the RI National Organization for Women.

RI GREEN PARTY CANDIDATES 2002
GREG GERRITT
A long time Green Party activist, Greg Gerritt is currently running for Mayor in Providence. This is the first high profile top of the ticket race the Green Party of Rhode Island has ever had, and Gerritt has knocked on thousands of doors, sent out a steady stream of press releases, participated in debates, and raised more money than any Green candidate in the history of Rhode Island. His platform is affordable housing, green development, clean energy, and making Providence into a non violent city.

Please help the campaign by talking to your neighbors, making a financial contribution, hosting a house party, putting up a sign, or joining the canvass.

DAVID SEGAL
We have a rare opportunity in Ward One a Green who is on equal footing with his opponents. Ward One includes Brown and RISD, and many non-student progressives to boot. If there's any district in the country that should be represented by a Green, this is it. Also in our favor is that a prominent centrist independent is challenging the Democrat, and will take away a chunk of the machine vote.

There are so many problems to contend with in Providence. I’m emphasizing:

Making housing more affordable; finding ways to increase city revenues, without raising property taxes; bettering our public schools and making them community centers; improving policing and instituting a civilian review board; promoting better citizenship by our universities; and passing a living wage.
I'd love your help. Please visit http://www.VoteSegal.com for more information.
JEFF TOSTE

- COMMUNITY UNITY
- RESPECTFUL EDUCATION
- OPEN GOVERNMENT

- A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
- QUALITY JOBS
- EQUAL WORK, EQUAL PAY

Jeff Toste has the courage for leadership with a new vision to improve our city and state. It starts with a foundation of respect for all people concerning the spending of our tax dollars; the safety and quality of our neighborhoods; and new ways Providence can care for itself in the future.

Raised on a farm in Tiverton, RI, Jeff learned about hard work, commitment, and integrity from his mother and father, Beverly and Joseph Toste. Vote for a new vision to improve our city and state. Make your vote count for a better Providence. VOTE TOSTE, Senator District 5, in November.

LARRY KERN
I've been suprised to discover that most of my proposals for Westerly involve moving us "back to the future" - using appropriate regulation, modern technology and ecological understanding to bring back some of the wonderful things we have lost or forgotten:

- back to a future where Westerly's water can again be praised as the best in the region.

- back to a future where our salt ponds thrive with eelgrass, supporting finfish and quahogs.

- back to a future where locally owned businesses can compete successfully against the huge corporate retailers which are paving our country.

- back to a future where our kids can ride bicycles safely to schools, parks, and beaches.

- back to a future where community matters, where people are proud and happy to call Westerly home.

Maybe being Green isn't so radical after all!
JOHN NIMMO

If there is a lesson to be learned from the attack on America on September 11, 2001 it is that the democracy we hold so dear must be protected. My response to this is to run for office and to stop the back door meetings which have robbed us in Providence of our democracy by allowing political insiders, who do not live here, to make the decisions for the people in our neighborhoods. This has got to stop and that is a real reason to run. Protect the cherished and fragile democracy of this country, protect our heritage with a good education, offer affordable housing to families and good government responsible to the people once again and not to the special interests now running the city.
