Pretending that eco-gadgets can resolve crises of climate change and exhaustion of fossil fuels does little more than let corporations off the hook. Instead of promoting individual acts of self-sacrifice that have no long-term environmental effect, isn't it time to look at what society is producing?
Synthesis/Regeneration: A Magazine of Green Social Thought (S/R) invites submission of articles on the theme of RETHINKING PRODUCTION. Articles should question what is manufactured, how economic decisions are made, or, most importantly, how production can be changed to attain social justice and environmental sanity.
Possible topics include:
- Militarism: How could we decrease military spending while increasing security and productive spending?
- Energy: How can a switch to renewables decrease the use of energy while supplying basic human needs?
- Food and agriculture: How can reducing shipping distances, shifting from animal to vegetable protein, and eliminating GMO and pesticide technologies increase the food supply?
- Consumer goods: How can replacing planned obsolescence with legislated durability reduce the quantity of manufacturing without reducing items that people have?
- How could changes in urban design, construction, housing, transportation, international trade, health care or human services reduce energy usage with no sacrifices in the quality of life?
- How short could the work week be and still provide the necessities of life?
- If corporate boards became powerless, how could manufacturing decisions be made concerning what to produce, how to produce it, and how to protect future generations?
If you would like to write concerning these or related themes, send your 1500 to 2500 word article to fitzdon@aol.com by March 20, 2008.
